The Rise of the Global-African Youth Consumer
What does the global consumer and African youth (age 15-24) markets have in common? Everything, the African youth market is increasingly representative of the new global consumer class, in fact.
Demographically, Africa as a region has the fastest growing population globally. This population will surpass India’s and China’s population as soon as 2025.
Currently, a large portion of Africa’s population is under 15. Even though the Global-African consumer group is still emerging, this youth “bulge” is getting ready to mature. These youth will be full-fledged citizens and challengers. We see evidence of them as citizens and challengers of the status quo with the political upheavals in North Africa. There are even minor movements in Senegal , Uganda, and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many see these upheavals rooted in politics, but in actuality, this is a shift in societies caused by a younger generation rising up – politically, socially, and economically.

Key Sectors in Southern Africa in 2011
The fastest growing sectors in Southern Africa (SADC) are mining, information communications technology (ICT), services, construction, and agriculture. Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Angola, Mozambique, and Zambia are major global producers of copper, gold, platinum, and diamonds.
Apart from South Africa, mining sectors in this region are not mature and so they have comparative advantage in commodities production. This region of the world holds the largest reserves of copper, gold, diamonds, and cobalt.

Opportunities and Challenges in Renewable Energy Projects in Africa
Kyle Denning had a fairly successful renewable energy company in the United States when he received a call one day about a carbon credit project in Rwanda. Now Denning is the managing director of an offshoot of that company in Kenya called Viability Africa.
While in Africa for his first project Denning was blown away by all of the possibilities to do business in the country and on the continent. “There’s so much competition throughout South America, Central America and Asia,” Denning explains, “we felt that we were going to be on the cutting edge of something by coming here and the timing was right.”

The Positive Side of Land Grabs in Africa
This year the Oakland Institute published the controversial report, “Understanding Land Investment Deals in Africa,” which stated hedge funds are acquiring land in Africa, without benefiting the people in these countries. While the subject of land grabs may be controversial, we are going to take a look at some of the ways that they can be beneficial.
“I see the land grab as something that offers opportunity,” says Nissi Ekpott co-author of Redefining Business in the New Africa. “Like anything in life there can be an upside and there can be a downside, depending on how the different parties involved manage it. I am of the opinion that for the first time in the modern history of Africa value has been seen in the continent beyond resources.”
